Well I loaded up some of my conome interfaces and some of them have an all black grid, and it doesn't do anything. Some of them actually have the button grid and they work, somewhat. I was able to make my prefixControl patch send the prefix to Control, but I'm not getting any LED updates... well wait, I didn't add my device IP to the mlrv patch! duh. Ok, now with my device IP in both prefixControl and mlrv, and my destination and OSC receive port set correctly in Control, it's working. This is all still with Max 5, mind you, but I don't think that really matters. I'll find out for sure tomorrow when I download Max 6.

Oh and I can confirm that switching over to the MonomeEmulation interface works, too. Right now only my conome192 and conome64 interfaces are working. Looks like the one on Charlie's site is my conome128 interface, which doesn't work. I'll compare it to my conome192 interface and see what's different.

I'm coming back to this project (using control as a monome) and hopefully can be of some assistance! I'll try max 6 and see if that affects anything, but it shouldn't really. As I've mentioned earlier somewhere in this thread (I think), if the max patch is in .maxpat format then you can edit it in a text editor to modify the IP address. You can use the demo of Max full version to convert an old patch to make it editable in a text editor later.

That's all from memory and I haven't played with this for a while so I'll come back to post more later!

1. oscbonjour needs to go inside the max-externals folder. Unfortunately I'm not sure how this works with the runtime version of Max.

2. You can just use the monome interface that comes with Control, right? Does that work any better?

3. I haven't tried out Max 6 yet, maybe someone else can chime in.

In case it's not clear, you don't have to use Bonjour to use mlr with Control. You can also manually enter the IP addresses. I think. I'm a little unsure what the Max runtime allows you to edit...

Hello everyone,
I've been trying to follow the instructions and i think I'm going crazy, so I have a few questions:

 · How do you 'install' oscbonjour? Do you just drop it into Max runtime folder? How can one know if it is installed?
· Is anyone sure that the interface file in "http://www.charlie-roberts.com/Control/interfaces/conome.js" is fine? When opened with control it shows a black screen with buttons for menu / refresh, but nothing else. No monome there. I loaded it directly from the link. Is there something wrong with this?
· Also, I am using max 6 runtime. Is this alright?

Thank you for your time

if you just want to use your iphone to control things like volume sliders or other buttons, do this:
in mlrv click setup button
in the OSC remote section enter the following
TO mlrv PORT: 8000
FROM mlrv PORT: 8080
DEVICE IP: your device's IP
in Control, preferences section should already have the OSC receive port set to 8080
in destinations, if you don't already have one correctly added, tap the + and enter your mac's ip with port 8000
tap to select the destination
now this assumes you've got your custom interface set with the correct OSC addresses, such as a slider with the OSC address of /mixer/1grp/vfader
if you want to start creating an interface for mlrv, you can get the OSC addresses by clicking the start mapping button in mlrv and click on the different controls to see the OSC address in the path field in the mapping section.

if you want to use your phone to control the grid ala monome emulation, (i haven't tried this yet since my ipad is a much better choice =) then you need to actually edit the mlrv patch.
right click the file _mlrV.maxpat and open it with a text editor
search the file for "udpsend localhost 8080" and replace localhost with your device IP. save the file.
in Control, preferences section should already have the OSC receive port set to 8080
in destinations, if you don't already have one correctly added, tap the + and enter your mac's ip with port 8000
tap to select the destination
this assumes your monome emulator interface has the prefix set to /mlrv. if it isn't then you need to edit the interface accordingly or use the file i posted in this thread called prefixControl.maxpat. the file allows you to set the prefix in the Control monome emulator interface dynamically to whatever you want so you can control basically any monome app.
here's the prefixControl.maxpat http://www.mediafire.com/?xw29mvsjxrr351w
note you have to edit the prefixControl.maxpat to use your device IP just like you did with mlrv.

Thanks for the response guys. I'll read the posts Charlie mentioned and after I get everything processed I'll ask for more help.

Basically, I'm experimenting with my phone what I'd eventually like to do with an iPad, which is use custom and dynamic layouts etc in Ableton to perform. I found mlrv to be a great tool for improvisation and if like to incorporate that into a live show context, between launching clips that contain whole songs. I'm just getting my feet wet in this grid world. Generally I'm not so nooby but this max stuff is a whole new world to me.

As far as my phone's ip, where do I get that? I thought I knew but it didn't connect when I tried it out.

thornz, what are you trying to get accomplished between your phone and mlrv? if you want to do the monome grid stuff (probably not since you have a launchpad?) then you have to edit the patch either in max or a text editor and change udpsend localhost to udpsend <youriphoneip>. if you just want to have some sliders knobs and buttons on your phone control different things in mlrv then you just need to specify your device ip and the send and receive ports in the setup page of mlrv. of course either way you need to make sure your iphone has your computer's ip and send port configured.

tell us exactly what you want to do and we can go from there. also get the following information: your mac's ip, your device's ip. make sure they're on the same network, and if you don't want latency issues put them on an ad hoc network.

ok, i followed the instructions for the bonjour stuff with mlr and it worked. gotta say the hardest part was "installing" the external. i am not well versed in that kinda thing =) i need instructions like "put this file here". i ended up putting the mxo into applications > max5 > cycling '74 > max-externals. the next hardest part was trying to find and then click the register and browse buttons on a 1280x800 screen. =) at first i didn't see the destination in control, but rather than start the steps over i just force quit and restarted control. everything worked fine after that! i don't think feedbackloop's problem is related to turning on the dac and volume and loading samples or anything, since he seems to be able to make mlr work fine with a launchpad. note: i'm on a mac, so i don't know if there's something different in windows. i might try it again from the start under windows.

gotta say, i do prefer my method of editing whatever patch i want with my device's IP =) i'm not cool enough to hack oscbonjour into patches like mlrv2.

Thanks for the summary of the setup, Ive got much further with that than previously. Im having a problem at the final hurdle, and hope someone can help.

Ive got the conome layout connected to the included mlr patch. Everything in the connection guide works perfectly. When I hit DAC the tempo light flashes. However, I cannot start the sequencer whatever I try. I am familiar with the use of MLR from the launchpad. The two loop pattern keys (Row 1, buttons 5 and 6 on conome) set the pattern recorders working on the screen as they should so I know Im getting proper communication with the patch. But I cannot get a loop running using the loop start keys on the left hand column.

Im using ASIO4ALL on a laptop. Using the nonome mlr patch and onscreen monome, i can get sound and sequencer running perfectly so Im sure its not the hardware.

Any ideas? Being so close is driving me a bit batty!

OK, here's an attempt at instructions for mlr. I've created a Bonjour enabled mlr patch (mlr 2.5.1) that should make interfacing with Control much easier. In order to use Bonjour you need to download and install the oscbonjour object for Max. This will allow the ip address of Control to be detected automatically by Max, and vice-versa.

The basic problem is we need to let Max know where Control is, and we need to let Control know where Max is. Here are the steps:

1. Download the oscbonjour Max object mentioned above and install it.
2. Download the Bonjour enabled mlr patch
3. Start Control (if it's already started force quit and start it again for best results)
3. In the preferences of Control, make sure the OSC receive port is set to 8080.
4. Open the file _mlr_charlie.maxpat found in the mlr download linked in step #2.
5. Hit the button labelled "register cntrl 8000" towards the bottom of the Max patch. This sets up Bonjour on your computer so that Control can see the ip address.
6. In the Destinations tab of Control, choose the IP address of your computer that should now appear thanks to the oscbonjour object in the Max patch.
7. In the Max patch, hit the "browse" button to look for available OSC services.
8. In the pulldown menu next to the browse button select "Control". DO NOT SELECT "cntrl".
9. Start the conome interface in Control. If you haven't already downloaded it into Control you can find it at: http://www.charlie-roberts.com/Control/interfaces/conome.js. This interface performs much better than the monome emulator that comes with Control currently.
10. In the Max patch, hit the /sys/prefix/mlr button. You should see the text in the upper left corner of the conome interface change to read /mlr (instead of /mlrV.
11. Play away!

Note that you can also manually enter IP addresses in both the Max patch and in Control if you don't want to use Bonjour. Like if you're a masochist or something :) I know the above is a lot of steps, but note that once everything is downloaded and installed you really only need steps 5 - 10. It shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to setup once you've done it a few times.

I haven't tried it with mlrV 2. It seemed super buggy last time I checked it out. But I've heard it's gotten better...

I can try and post instructions for mlr (v1) tonight and will take a look at mlrV 2 sometime soon. If ronji is still lurking around this thread, he's really the one to bug about this...
