Hello Everyone,

I have been tearing my hair out on this for a couple days and I just cannot get this to work.

I am running Control on a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and trying to communicate with a Win7 x64 desktop through rtpMIDI. The problem is that rtpMIDI never detects my tablet in the Directory window, and Control never detects the rtpMIDI session in the Destinations window. They just do not see each other... I can add a Directory manually in rtpMIDI but it just tells me that there was no response when connecting and latency is just questions marks.

Some important items:
-Bonjour is installed and running in services
-rtpMIDI reports that it is using Apple Bonjour
-I can ping my pc from the tablet and I can ping my tablet from the PC...
-Ports 5004 and 5005 are forwarded on my router
-A Wireshark session recording clearly shows received packets from my tablet with the correct port destination of 5004
-All software firewalls are disabled
-While running Control on my Nexus S, my tablet and my phone automatically see each other in the destinations window

Any help would be immensely appreciated. I'm really going out of mind about this and I feel like I've tried all of the obvious routes. I'm not even worried about getting the MIDI data to anything at this point, I just need rtpMIDI to make the connection.

Hi,

I'm really sorry you've been spending time on this. From the description in the Android Market:

"Control enables users to create their own interfaces for controlling musical, artistic and virtual reality applications. It is built on top of the WebKit rendering engine and allows users to define their interfaces via JSON files. Features include:
- Outputs Open Sound Control (OSC). MIDI coming soon!"

I've made attempts to add RTP MIDI to Android with the humatic library but haven't gotten it to work as of yet. Obviously the "soon" in the above description is inaccurate.

However, after taking a month off of Control to work on a different project I'm getting ready to dive back in and release a 2.0 version of Control. I'd very much like for rtpMIDI on Android to be a big part of that version. - Charlie

I'll add that if you have any development chops there is an attempt to make this work on GitHub... if I remember correctly I was never able to get the device to join a session correctly. You can see my attempts to get going with this here:

Ah so! I did see the "coming soon" disclaimer in the description, but I was thrown off by the title of the app which is "Control (OSC + MIDI)" in the Android market.

My development chops are half-baked, so I doubt I'd be any help, but I'll check that link out and wait with a wild look in my eyes for the new version! ;)

In reality, I just want to control Traktor SP2 for now, so I'll explore the OSC route. I'm assuming I have to build a PureData patch to bridge between Control and Traktor, correct?

Well, as far as I know Traktor (and most other NI products) supports OSC, so, I think you should be able to use it with Control without involving RTP MIDI.

Yeah, I agree the name is misleading... just wanted to keep it the same as the App Store name... - Charlie

Yes, and "Control (OSC + MIDI Coming Soon)" would be a bit too verbose. ;)

Well, I had a feeling it wouldn't be as easy as I had hoped. NI claims to have added OSC support to Traktor, but every forum and doc I've come across states that NI also says "it has never worked." lol. So, added? Yes. Working? No. I don't even see a way to create a new controller .tsi file in the Controller Manager of Traktor that would accept OSC, so I assume they have hidden it or removed it completely. Looks like I'll be learning Pure Data. :) Not too big of a deal since I also like puttering around with Arduino boards, and there are libraries for Arduino communication.

Anyway, this is a similar situation as to what I ran into with TouchOSC. Originally, you had to use Pure Data for OSC <=> MIDI conversion, and there was a tool to automatically create PD patches from your TouchOSC interfaces, but now the TouchOSC Bridge does that for you. But, and it's a big but, I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Control is the only game in town, afaik, that allows for custom interfaces on Android.

I'm getting slightly off-topic from my OP. :) Oh well.
