First of all, thank you charlie for creating this for android (I'm using an acer a500). I thought for sure I'd have to shell out $100 more for a USED first gen ipad with lower specs (for touchosc)

Z's interface creation util has been great so far also.

the only thing I'm missing now is how to convert OSC to midi on the PC end? It seems like it should be easy but I'm having trouble finding the info.

Is there a standard max patch or program that does this easily?

Hmmm. I don't know of any. I would look into using Pd if you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty. Or Max, of course, if you already have a license.

The real answer to this, of course, is for me to finishing implementing MIDI on Android... I'm trying! Really having problems finding time to devote to this the past few weeks...

I'd be down to donate some money if you ever chose to accept donations, even if you don't want to officially make it donationware.

fermicirrus, does your application need the OSC to go to your PC before going to MIDI? If not, I can highly recommend The Missing Link Wifi OSC-to-MIDI box (www.wifimidi.com). I have a couple of these and they work brilliantly with both Control and TouchOSC.

The MIssing Link is a great product, I agree... if you're going straight to hardware it's the way to go. No need to involve a computer.

Even if you're using a computer it's a really good option since Android doesn't support ad-hoc wifi connections. The jitter that comes with bouncing through a router can be pretty bad; the Missing link gets rid of that. Less latency, less jitter. - Charlie

The missing link looks awesome but I don't have the coin for it right now :\

Is the latency you're referring to the same or better if the PC is plugged into one of the router's ethernet ports instead of wifi? Also, have you tried it with a dedicated router?

EDIT: Nevermind, just read this topic:

Guess i'll have to experiment with it.

Some news about Ice Cream Sandwich... apparently it supports adhoc connections, they call it WiFi Direct. Kind of cool, it also supports direct connections between two Android devices.

    Hooray!

Here's some more info about WiFi Direct... sounds nice. I like that I could have my laptop connected to a local wireless network (for communicating with other laptops) while simultaneously communicating with my android tablet via wifi connect.

FYI, In order to do this with my iPad I use a separate USB wifi dongle on my laptop for the adhoc network and my laptops wifi card to connect to a larger network. - Charlie

Im not finding out much info on WIFI direct for android (acer a500 anyway)... Looks like it may be available in the future?

In the mean time i found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itGz_0fB6jc&feature=related

Yeah, it won't be available until Android 4.0 runs on it.

Nice find on the hack in the meantime! Let me know if you try it and get it to work. - Charlie

from what I read (the WP article is usable) WiFi direct and ad-hoc networking are not the same thing. It seems (but that's really unclear) that it needs its own hardware integrated into the chipset (as indicated by a list of "certified devices", all starting in 2011), so I'm not sure if a software pdate can bring us wifi direct. I'll see though, as soon as ICS for my new nexus S arrives. :-)
(I also wanted to run here to report on that, but held my horses due to the abovementioned doubts)

I'm also curious how the simultaneous connection to an infrastructure network and a wifi-direct connection would work, hardware wise. needs more antennae, no?

a it turns out, ad-hoc is available in the latest custom rom for the a500: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-android-3-2-custom-rom-on-acer-iconia-a500-honeycomb-tablet/

    also used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069569

with the root explorer method. (not adb) Ad-Hoc is 100% functional now.

For some reason ad-hoc wasn't working with the custom rom, even though the feature list said it should.
